Enjoying the Calm of Boothbay Harbor<br /> I don’t know. With all the crazy weather and so many folks struggling to get back to normal in the Northeast, I just had to go through my arsenal of photos and find a more peaceful time when I was there. One early summer evening in Maine, when I was sitting on the harbor in Boothbay, enjoying the stillness of the unseasonably cool night, I took this photo. It’s nothing special. I just remember the peace I found just sitting there alone. I was actually freezing, while people back home in Phoenix, were unseasonable hot, smelting in the desert. A few days later in Maine it became unseasonably hot in the 90′s. We decided to cut our trip short because it became too hot in Maine. A 105 degrees in Phoenix feels better than 90 degrees in Maine. Go figure!<br /> <br /> Most of us just want things to be normal. I wish for folks that our struggling with the cold and their losses, will soon find their normal again. Things always come back around. I guess that’s hard to believe when you’re sitting in the midst of a crisis. But it will happen.. in time!

Enjoying the Calm of Boothbay Harbor
I don’t know. With all the crazy weather and so many folks struggling to get back to normal in the Northeast, I just had to go through my arsenal of photos and find a more peaceful time when I was there. One early summer evening in Maine, when I was sitting on the harbor in Boothbay, enjoying the stillness of the unseasonably cool night, I took this photo. It’s nothing special. I just remember the peace I found just sitting there alone. I was actually freezing, while people back home in Phoenix, were unseasonable hot, smelting in the desert. A few days later in Maine it became unseasonably hot in the 90′s. We decided to cut our trip short because it became too hot in Maine. A 105 degrees in Phoenix feels better than 90 degrees in Maine. Go figure!

Most of us just want things to be normal. I wish for folks that our struggling with the cold and their losses, will soon find their normal again. Things always come back around. I guess that’s hard to believe when you’re sitting in the midst of a crisis. But it will happen.. in time!

  • Novel Phone Booth at Grand Hotel, Mackinac Island, Michigan<br /> You don’t see these very often anymore, and I’m not sure that’s a good thing. What Super Storm Sandy showed, was cell phone service gets knocked out with everything else during power outages. A few phone booths may have saved the day for many people lost without power and communication. And maybe these nostalgic looking English-style booths kinda “perty-up” the neighborhood. Just saying. <br /> This little red phone booth sits on the grounds of the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island in northern Michigan. It seemed to be summoning me..Phone Home..Phone Home! But I didn’t go in for fear that the ghost of Clark Kent would show up and need it to change into Superman. It’s possible! Christopher Reeves did do a film here called, “Somewhere in Time”. It’s a stretch..HaHa!
  • Sentinel Dome,Yosemite National Park<br /> A nice vigorous mile hike to get to the top of Sentinel Dome to catch the sunset light of this 8,122 ft high hill. From this high point you can see 360 degrees around all of Yosemite. Quite invigorating and worth the trip.
  • Taking in the Grand Canyon, Arizona<br /> Watching the colors of the canyon change as sunset approaches. The distant Colorado River falls into deep shadows, as it snakes through this mammoth hole it’s created. Cameras are clicking all around me, as photographers try to catch this fleeting moment, as the sun sets. I’m probably in the way, sitting there just taking it all in, as if I’m the only one in the universe enjoying this incredible, into one of the 7 wonders of the world. And I really don’t care that I may be in the way.. This moment is mine.
  • Coast near Lincoln City, Oregon<br /> Oregon Coast with it’s fog and clouds never disappoints for a dramatic HDR shot. Summers are cool and we look for any excuse to get out of the Arizona heat and venture up to Oregon in summer to spend a week exploring the coast lines.
  • Garden,Kailua-Kona, Hawaii<br /> While on a visit to Kona, Hawaii, we stopped by the Outrigger Hotel to catch some sunset photos. This interesting garden with lagoon and tiki torches made for some great reflective photos. Hawaii gives you all the elements of colorful surroundings. You just have to have fun and set up the shots that catch your attention. Evening shots are always my favorite time for shooting and in Hawai that’s the time I come alive.
  • Water Fountain Paradise, Arizona<br /> As I travel around Phoenix during the day, realizing we do live in a desert, having a little water spouting out makes it feel more like an oasis instead of this gigantic formidable hot,dry desert wasteland. Fountains and man-made lakes make it seem more tolerable. We travel alot around the world, but it’s always good to get back to Arizona. It seems when the rest of the country is going through hell with hurricanes, tornadoes, and crazy weather, Arizona is calm, blue and mild. It’s not everybody’s cup of tea, but then, we’re kind of glad it’s not!
  • Castle Neuschwanstein, Bavaria, Germany<br /> Ludwig II’s fairy tale castle, as it is sometimes called is the climax to the “Romantic Road” trip through southern Germany into Bavaria. Autumn was in full blaze when we arrived the evening before. Snow was forecasted to be moving in and the small town of Schwangau, we decided to stay in, was completely fogged in. The next morning of our planned trip to the “fairy tale” castle didn’t look to promising with everything still fogged in. I guess the weather gods heard our cry for clear passage, for by noon the skies had cleared into a beautiful blue day, which allowed us to hike higher into the mountains above the castle and catch this shot. Made you feel like you were in a dream, sitting on top of the world.
  • Rocky Shores of Lake Huron, Michigan<br /> On our trip to Mackinac Island we followed the west shoreline of Lake Huron for just this reason, to hopefully catch stretches of shoreline that were pristine and endless. This golden shore accented by the setting sun and a little photoshop magic helped set the mood I was hoping for.

  • The Majestic Bryce Canyon, Utah<br /> You’re pretty much awe struck when you approach the edge of Bryce Canyon at various view points. There is really nothing quite like it. It’s inspiring and definitely perspiring when you decide to go down into this huge hole. Problem is you have to eventually climb back out. And in the higher altitudes it’s an undertaking. But you forget about that and concentrate on the more important task at hand.. “footagraphy”. That’s my way of saying, you walk a few feet up hill, stop, check out the view,take a picture, walk up a few feet, stop,check out the view, take a picture, etc. That way nobody notices that your panting for air, about ready to faint from the strenuous uphill climb. Next time you’re climbing a big hill, about to faint try, “footagraphy”!
  • Light House near Sitka, Alaska<br /> You truly feel like you’re at the top of the world, in Alaska. Everything there is larger than life, raw and wild. Heading back out to the Inside Passage from Sitka, you pass Rockwell Lighthouse. The area is peppered with small islands underneath towering mountains to the south. The cloud formations constantly moving, constantly changing, perfect for HDR-type shots. I think I could spend days traveling around and photographing this beautiful corner of the world. My second trip here and it only gets better each visit.
  • The Gardens at Grand Hotel, Mackinac Island<br /> Hard to tell it’s raining as I make an attempt to photograph this beautiful fountain and grounds at the Grand Hotel. Folks who know the movie, “Somewhere in Time”, will recognize the scenery where part of the movie was filmed. We spent quite a bit of time, shooting the hotel and grounds, taking a horse and buggy ride around the area and enjoying one of the most beautiful islands anywhere. Probably the most enjoyable part of the trip was bicycling around the 7 mile perimeter of the island. Everyone would gather to catch the sunset on the beach in the evening, looking across Lake Huron toward the Mackinac Bridge to the west. Great times!
  • Cruise Ship Pier at Juneau, Alaska<br /> Pulling into Alaska’s capital of Juneau almost looks make-believe from atop a cruise ship using a bit of HDR. It was raining and that made it fun and different for us Arizonians. We spent the day walking all over Juneau, with umbrellas and a nice steady rain. What more could you ask for. We don’t get much of that in the desert, so it truly was a pleasant experience, soaked shoes and all.
  • Old Growth Forest of the Olympic Peninsula<br /> On the way to the Hoh Rain Forest in Olympic National Park, I stopped off to wander through some old growth forest. I found a dirt road andI just started walking. The eerie wet forest was alive with activity mostly from under my feet. Everywhere you walked it was spongy. You could hear the buzzing, scaping and knawing sounds from organisms,insects, animals and who knows what else, decomposing the earth from below. I was afraid I would fall into the abyss never to be heard from again. Traveling alone, it’s easy to get spooked by these types of things. I took a couple of photos and wandered back to the truck to get back on track for my journey to the Hoh Rain Forest.
  • Along the Roof Tops of Rothenberg,Germany<br /> It’s quite a climb through the narrow spiral staircase that takes one to the top of the City Hall Tower. I kept thinking how can these steps get any narrower and they did. By the time I climbed through what was now a hole to the top, it got pretty queasy. They would only allow a certain number of tourist up on top of the tower at a time, which was a good thing considering how cramped the space was. But wow, what a view. With fresh snow from the night before blanketing the roof tops and countryside in the distance, it was quite breathtaking. With screening all around you, finding a hole to poke your camera through was a challenge. I would definitely say, Rothenburg was one of the more scenic towns on the Romantic Road in Germany. It was snowing the 1st day we arrived, and that for us, made it even more special.
  • Autumn Hay Fields in West Virginia<br /> I love to just get on a plane, sometimes not much planning in advance, rent a car and then go wildly and freely into the country. I watched the Internet for peak season in West Virginia this year, so to best plan a fly back and take advantage of changing colors of fall. West Virgina is a great place for leaf-peeping. This country road was blazing with color, so I got off the Freeway and just let it take me into the hills. No traffic, no people around, just the horses, cows and me. So Happy Thankgiving to you all, and may we gives thanks for our blessings, and help those less fortunate then ourselves.
  • Full Moon at Glacier Point, Yosemite National Park<br /> A planned trip to Yosemite during Full Moon paid off this past September. The haze from forest fires lingering on the horizon. It was a beautiful calm night from Glacier Point, looking east across Grizzly Point. As it got dark, hikers coming down from Vernal Falls looked like lightning bugs scattered across the trails.
  • Amish Country Bed and Breakfast<br /> Lancaster, Pa., has Bed & Breakfast scattered through-out the towns and countryside. We often search out these B&B’s looking for Victorian flairs when we can find them. This particular one had a down home country cottage feel. Just right for a an overnight stay. The way we travel, with landscape photography in mind, doesn’t always lend itself to totally relaxing and enjoying these kinds of places. But if I can find a porch, it becomes a perfect night for just sitting out and enjoying each others company. Try it sometime, you might like it.
  • West Virginia Wandering Cascades<br /> Autumn this year was blazing colorful in West Virgina, but they had such a dry season , one could hardly find any nice waterfalls. So I dug through my arsenal of photos from my last trip and found this beautiful cascade, which has no name, that I could find. It just happened to be on a country back road, just waiting for me to find. It was completely gone this year, so I reminisce.
  • Snowy Tracks along the Romantic Road in Germany<br /> Can anyone see the snow coming down? I get a kick out of photographing tracks. This one caught my attention because of the snow coming down and I’m always looking for “leading lines” in photography. The lines of the tracks lead you through the photo, down the tracks to where they look like their eventually touching. I put the tripod as low as it would go, and balanced the tracks in the middle. Look for “leading lines” in nature and you will probably find yourself creating a nice interesting photo to share.
