Killarney storm clouds, Ireland-Travelling through Ireland on the back roads is a thrilling exercise in wanting to see everything and remembering to drive on the “opposite side” of the road, for us Americans. We saw this small lake on the drive to Killarney and had to check it out. With the storm clouds rolling in, it made for an excellent opportunity to create an HDR image.

  • "Buy This Photo"-"Doors of Pride"-Dubrovnik, Croatia-In Dubrovnik,Croatia, the many stairs within the old city walls lead to fancy doors. The centurys-old homes outlived the well-kept doors showing pride of ownership. As steep as the corridors of stairs were, I would walk up and down each one searching for the fanciest ones. Quite winded most of the time, I knew the entryways would make great HDR photos. Hope you agree.
  • "Buy This Photo"- "Lover's Cove"-La Jolla, California-The ritzy and glitzy town of La Jolla north of San Diego sits on the hill above this beautiful stretch of beach. Flowers blanket the cliffs and a nice couple conveniently were enjoying the evening as I patiently waited for a sunset that didn’t happen. In spite of the that, the colors were vibrant and the clouds added to the subdued mood of this surreal moment. See my gallery above for all my photos.
  • Fifty of us took the mile and half trek up the hill over slick rock and sand, narrow passageways with touchy drop-offs, to sit on the natural amphitheater-like sandstone, all waiting for the big event. Was there going to be the infamous red sunset or not? Most of us had resigned to the “not” side since thick clouds pretty much dominated the western sky. As the sun appeared to set undramatically, people started getting up to take the long trek back down. The “wait ’til the bitter end photographers” stayed put and sure enough for a quick thirty seconds the clouds opened up to allow the sun to blast out it’s magically light display. The “hold-outs” packed their gear and like a grand exodus, we all headed down the hill satisfied that we had gotten what we came for
  • Foot Bridge,Japanese Gardens,Portland Oregon-A rainy day in Portland, Oregon. I guess nothing out of the ordinary. I had my assistant hold up an umbrella to keep the camera dry. I didn’t fair so well. But having everything dripping with water made the whole area just glisten, and being from Arizona, this was a special treat..rain is something we hardly ever see. This bridge was busy. Everyone stopped in the middle to take in the view of the pond. I waited and finally got my shot.
  • Mesa Arch-Canyonlands,Utah-Sometimes if I'm planning a sunrise shoot, I'll try to scope out an area the day before. In this case I took the hike down to Mesa Arch right before sunset to guess where the sun would rise the next day. The orange glow of the sun was coming in nicely, so I grabbed a few shots through the arch with the snow-capped La Sal mountains in the distance. With my tripod just a few feet from the edge of a 1000 foot vertical drop, it kept me on my toes ready for any unsuspecting wind gust. After photographing here, I hiked quickly back out to catch the sunset at Green River Overlook a few miles away. Those I’ll show another time. Check out my gallery above for all my daily photos.
  • Rialto Bridge on the Grand Canal, Venice-When you’re walking around Venice, sooner or later you end up at the Rialto Bridge. We were purposely trying to get lost through the maze of dark narrow corridors when we came out on the Grand Canal. I don’t remember ever seeing a photo from this vantage point and I knew it would be a great composition of the hustle and bustle of life on the Grand Canal. Having the Rialto Bridge in the background set off the scene nicely.

  • Blazing Autumn in Utah-Utah in the fall, comes ablaze with color. Heading back to Salt Lake City from Jackson Hole and the Grand Tetons in Wyoming, was a slow trip because every bend in the road produces another wonderland to stop and photograph. Needless to say, it was an all day trip. This particular HDR one-shot was a difficult attempt next to a fast and dangerous highway. One step over the guardrails was sheer drop-offs. I’d hurry up set-up the tripod between cars and compose the shot, then hurry and shut the tripod and squeeze against the guardrail to keep from getting hit by oncoming traffic. Horns were a blowin’, and rightlfully so. There was an obscessed madman carrying a camera, going where nobody in their right mind would ever go, especially when it was getting dark. Hope you enjoy.
