"Sunset Over Canyonlands, Utah"-“After light” or some may call it “light after the light”. No matter what you call it, as a photographer you wait ’til the bitter end before you pack up your photo gear and hike back in the dark, no matter where you’re at. The sunset has different stages of light and color as it projects out in the atmosphere and bounces off the different layers of clouds. I was with a group of photographers in the Canyonlands of Utah at Green River Overlook. We talked all things photography, one being, “you wait for the “light after the light” before you pack it in. We were not having any sunset, for the clouds were thick on the western horizon. It was cold and extremely windy and we all decided to call it a day and head back to the parking lot. Just as we got to our cars, a sliver of light come cracking through under the clouds and lit the entire sky red. Like a bunch of crazy’s, we ran back to the edge of the canyon to set back up, as the red quickly melted away. I mananged to get a few shots off before it was all gone. No one else faired as well. As we packed one last time, and kicked ourselves in the butt, we all rehearsed in our minds, ” wait for the “light after the light”.

• Super Moon, Arizona-Why are so many people intrigued by the moon? Photographers go a little bit crazy about catching a once in a life time shot of it. But a super moon sends them into a dazzle. This one reflected off a lake in Arizona was done on a clear night and the time delay brought alot of blue into the photo as well as a starry effect. If you missed it you’ll have to wait to next year.
• Redwood Forest, California-Giant and towering redwoods surround you as you weave your way through Humboldt Redwood State Park in northern California. I used a Canon 16-35 mm wide angle lens to catch as much as I could of these incredibly tall trees.
• Morning in Venice-You won’t get there without climbing a bridge. All points anywhere in Venice require crossing over canals and canals and canals. The colors this morning in Venice were very vibrant. Almost storybook when you add some HDR effect. Happy Mothers Day to all the mothers following my blog!!
• Sunset Over Molokai, Hawaii-Maui on the leeward side is a perfect area to catch great sunsets. We were in Kihue for these shots. Every night for 10 days it was scoping out the next great spot to catch magical colors as the light settled over the island of Molokai. Ths HDR shot was taken by merging 5 photos in Photomatix and then running it through Topaz Adjust and Photoshop CS5. Hope you enjoy!
• Green Lake, Whistler, Canada-You never know quite what I’m going to put up next. I don’t know myself. I guess it keeps things interesting. A very scenic drive out of Vancouver heading north will take you to Whistler, well known for the Winter Olympics, back a few years ago. We’ve taken this drive a number of times in the fall and the weather is normally pretty good. We happen to catch some great weather for this photo, and a nice shot of a couple in a canoe returning from a ride on the Green Lake, just outside of Whistler.
• Park Avenue, Arches National Park, Utah-Recently I was traveling through the canyons along the Colorado River and stopped up in the Arches National Park. I kept stopping by “Park Avenue” as it is called, because it was so dramatic and for HDR photos I wanted to get some different cloud formations. I hiked down along the beaten path and was able to catch a variety of shots in this incredible landscape. It’s hard to describe the feeling you get inside this canyon with enormous sandstone walls surrounding you. It’s pretty unbelievable.

• Canadian Rockies Alpine Lake-Touring through the Canadian Rockies, around Glacier National Park abounds in Alpine lakes. We traveled from Vancouver, British Columbia across the mountains over to Calgary staying on the Trans Canadian Highway 1 most of the way. By mid-September it was already cooling quite a bit, something us Arizonians are not use to, so it was time to head south.
• "Pacific Coast, California"-Can you guess? I thought I would leave this one up to you. If you have kept up with my blog you may notice I scramble up the destinations I've been to, just to make it more interesting. In my "Gallery" at the top of the page you can see a daily growing list of all the places I've been. You might be able to get a hint from there on where this is at. By the way the photos in the gallery are for sale and can be purchased from the "buy it" button. I'll post on monday where this photo was taken. Good Luck!. One hint-
• "Sahalie Falls on the McKenzie River"-One of Oregons best waterfalls, weaving through the old growth forest with a loop trail down past another of my favorites-Koosah Falls. I’ve wondered this forest many times, usually as an excuse to get out of the heat of Arizona. The cool current that these falls create is incredible. The aqua blue hue through the middle of the falls is naturale. If you’re ever in Eugene, Oregon, don’t miss this stop. Take Hwy 126 east for 68 miles and follow the signs. Worth a hike and view.
• Norwegian Star Cruise Ship-It’s never static on a cruiseship. So waiting for an area to be clear where there are not 100′s of people wandering around is tough business. This open-air promenade with glassed elevators was quite impressive. Just had to try an HDR shot here. In the end I had to tonemappe just one image because of too many people. In any case, it grabs the moment I was looking for.
• Krka Falls Croatia-Imagine a place where you can walk up to the falls and wander along it’s grassy banks for what seems like a mile, and then swim at the bottom under many falls coming out of the hills all around you. Just straight east of Venice across the Adriatic Sea is Croatia. About an hour trip out of Croatia takes you into a National Park where Krka Falls is located. If you ever get to Croatia, put this one on your list. I think it’s one of the most beautiful falls in the world.
• A New Years Sunset in Arizona-Each year a buddy of mine throws a New Year’s Party up next to the Superstition Mountains east of Phoenix in Arizona. Each year as luck would have it there are spectacular sunsets. He lives on the edge of a preserve that is the foothills of what is pretty much a desert wilderness. As it gets dark you hear the coyotes in the distance and you’re looking over your shoulder for mountain lions that have been spotted frequently enough in the area. My friend starts summoning me back to the party, saying, “It’s not safe out there alone after dark”. I yell back,”Not before I get my shot”! He never goes out beyond his property without a gun. My only weapon is a tripod with a camera attached. It gets creepy after dusk so I head back with hopefully some good shots. You be the judge, but one thing is for sure ..you can’t beat those Arizona sunsets!
• Bamboo Forest, Maui,Hawaii-On the road to Hana, on Maui, the hillsides in certain areas are totally covered with bamboo forest. At the “Garden of Eden” arboretum, many varieties of bamboo trees are grown and displayed along beautiful pathways. I don’t remember which bamboo this was, but I thought it was cool enough to get into and take a photo skyward. It made for a neat effect and ended up being one of favorites along way to Hana.
• Barrett-Jackson Car Auction-I love the old big fender antique cars. And where better to enjoy these than at one of the largest car auctions anywhere- Scottsdale, Az each winter. This past winter was great weather, great food and great photo “ops”, and an opportunity to try some HDR photography with cars. The challenge was, lots of people in the way, so it worked best keeping the shots tight. I’ll share more as time goes, but this was one of my favorites.
• "Buy This Photo"- The Wishing Well, Balboa Park, San Diego-As most HDR photographers know, cloud formations add alot of character to HDR shots and a whole lot of fun in the post-processing. San Diego this week was cloudy or should I correctly say, the “marine layer” was hovering over the city for most of the days we were there. This is great for photography, not so great if you want to lay on the beach. We spent time in Balboa Park around the museums. The Spanish Baroque architecture is elaborate and a thrill to photograph. It definitely takes you back to another era.

• Cancun Sunset, Mexico-
As we were cruising north out of Cozumel heading for the port in Galveston, I noticed a line of hotels silohuetted by the sun. It didn’t hit me right away that we were passing Cancun. The next year we were sitting on the beach in Cancun looking east, the other way, seeing the ships passing in the distance. It was kind of cool seeing the different perpectives. I don’t know why I bring this up. It reminds me of a story I once heard of a man when he was a young boy, fishing in a pond, looking up at a jet passing overhead and dreaming of one day flying in an airplane. Now he’s older sitting in an airplane, looking down below at the lakes and ponds, wishing he was fishing. Dreams change, perspectives change.. Time plays with us. As much as I’ve traveled and flown all over the world, at the moment, fishing sounds pretty good!
• "Buy This Photo"-Foggy Central Coast, California-After spending the night near Point Reyes, California, we drove the next morning to Point Reyes lighthouse. As we approached, the weather turned more and more foggy. When we arrived at the lighthouse we stood looking over the hill into the distance at nothingness, as we were completely fogged in. We never did see the lighthouse. We decided to drive north up the coast and found pure bliss just north of Jenner. As the day past, the fog lifted and an incredible rocky flowery coast beckoned us to spend the day. Which we did!
• La Jolla Cove, California
The grassed park behind me was bustling with activity with families enjoying their kids, frisbee’s buzzing through the air, joggers, bicyclist and rollers bladers sucking in the fresh air as they rolled by. You would never know how busy it was, from looking at the serene cliffs, covered with flowers and sandy coves. I guess below me were the curious explorers checking out the knooks and crannies and cliffs and caves that existed along the La Jolla coast. For me, finding a clear moment to shoot a lovely shot of a beautiful sunset was all that was on my mind. The sun faded off behind the clouds, never to appear, but still made for a lovely shot over the Pacific Ocean.
