Waterfalls at Japanese Gardens, Portland, Oregon<br /> apenese Gardens are always alot of fun to photograph. Portland’s Japanese Gardens, has one of the most impressive man-made waterfalls I’ve ever seen. I don’t know who designed it, but it definitely is a work of art. The Red Maple trees set it off so colorfully and the water cascades down tiers that look quite natural.

  • Oo ee Baby, Won’t You Let Me Take You On A Sea Cruise<br /> If you haven’t tried cruising, you’ll need to put it on your bucket list. For any age it is a whole lot of fun. You unpack once and you’re good to go for the week. Royal Caribbean a few years ago added the “Liberty of the Seas” to their fleet of mega-ships. I personally like the mega-ships with big mall-like palisades, Ice skating rinks, rock climbing walls, and on and on. This is a shot of the colorful pool deck with the disco up above in the skybox. Like the old nostalgic song says..”Oo ee Baby, won’t you let me take you on sea cruise”.
  • Day at the Carnival, Santa Barbara,Ca<br /> I thought this was a cool bronze-like statue of a boy enjoying a day with his father, uncle or someone special in his life, riding his shoulders, as they hung-out at the carnival. Kind of reminds me of the 50′s when I was a kid horsing around with my dad. This is located just off state street in downtown Santa Barbara, California.
  • Red Maple near Park City, Utah<br /> I was lost in color as I climbed back into the thick of it, in this huge grove of maple trees near Park City, Utah. I was totally surrounded by all this never-ending burst of reds. It was hard to figure what to photograph, to break it down into a simplied form. So I just picked a small part of a tree, and let that speak for the entire forest.
  • Utah Autumn<br /> Beautiful autumn leaves at every turn when you drive through many of the valleys through out the mountains above Salt Lake City. With the drive this time of year!
  • Autumn in Utah on the Virgin River<br /> Since we are getting into fall hear in the U.S., I thought I would share some fall photos for the next few days. I’m preparing to head out to Yosemite National Park, and if all goes well, I can stay in touch, when I can find Wi-Fi in the mountains. It’s kind of iffy, but we’ll see.
  • Somewhere in West Virgina<br /> I was on my way to Babcock State Park to shoot the Babcock Grist Mill. I saw this river and bridge and had to pull off the road and grab a shot. The beautiful autumn leaves were in full bloom and the distance mountains set it off nicely. Anybody know where I am, let me know. This happens alot when you’re traveling, and just pull over in your car and start shooting.
  • Bridge Under the New River Gorge Bridge<br /> Fall is a great time to take the winding dirt road into the River Gorge,West Virgina. Beautiful autumn colors light up the deep gorge. At the bottom you cross a bridge that leads you up to Wolf Creek. I spent a day just photographing this incredible valley.
  • Restaurant La Cavour in Old Town Quebec City,<br /> A great place to get that old time European town feeling close to home is, Quebec City in Canada. It’s French and so much about the town makes you think you are in France, which is great and alot cheaper to get to, than France itself. HDR photography is alot of fun there. You simply park the car and do it all on foot.
  • Full Moon over Yosemite Valley<br /> Just got back from a 3 day trip to Yosemite National Park, California. Been quite a while since my last visit, so it was time to return. I picked a great time to go with the full moon dominating the evening sky, but picked a bad time for catching the Yosemite Falls, which was dry at this time of year. I like shooting at twilight and/or the “golden hour”. It was interesting my 1st day reaching this point at a vista above Yosemite Valley. The skies started out quite gray with a huge thunderhead over the Sierras, with no prospect of an exciting colorful sunset, as most of the 20 or so photographers, who were lined up, were murmuring. I knew the full moon was buried under those clouds somewhere and just maybe it would all break loose and shine through. The photographers seemed to be all on the same frequency, all packed it in and left except for me and another guy. Within 30 minutes the sky opened up and the moon shined through, along with remnants of red hues from a setting sun. Like a fishermen waiting patiently for a bite on his line, the fish took the bait and it was time to reel ‘em in, and we reeled in some good shots..worthy of the wait. So a message to you photographers about the “golden hour”, don’t leave too soon..wait!!
  • Reflections of El Capitan, Yosemite National Park, Ca<br /> It was one of those, “I wonder if I can get the whole thing in the picture” moments. El Capitan was huge in front of me as I searched for a possible spot to catch a mirror image in the stream. The other challenge was I knew I had to be on a bit higher ground for the reflection in the water to line up correct. I saw an embankment further down the stream with still water in front of it and thought it might work, so I headed for it. Got up on top of the ledge and, wallah, it was a perfect spot. With my wide angle lens stretched out to the max I framed up the perfect picture reflection of El Capitan. As a landscape photographer, you get excited when it all comes together. I used a 16-35mm canon lens to capture this shot. Three images were taken and then merged into Photomatix, then post-processed in Topaz and CS5.
  • Sunrise at Watson Lake, Prescott, Arizona<br /> One of my favorite spots to photograph in Arizona is the “The Dells”, Prescott, Arizona. The boulders are flung around everywhere making some interesting fun photography. This sunrise shot was one of my 1st, before I started climbing and jumping around different boulders looking for better and better vantage points. I remember taking a leap between a rather deep crevasse and slammed my brand new Canon 16-35mm into the granite wall. It bounced back and slammed me in the nose giving me quite a jolt. The lens managed to stay in one piece, though the sky light filter got bent up pretty good. Saved by a cheap filter. That’s the way to do it!
  • Amish Homesteads in Lancaster, Pa.<br /> The area around Lancaster, Pa. is quite a treat with covered bridges, manicured landscapes of farms and rolling hills. The locals advertise homemade rootbeer, fruit and vegetable stands along the highways and byways are on the honor system, craftmen and artisans display their wares at local gift shops and town stores. It all seems a bit retro to another time when life was alot simpler, in some ways, maybe better. Doing without electricity..now that might be a little tough.
  • Half Moon Sunset, Yosemite National Park<br /> Glacier Point in Yosemite National Park, is a great spot for photographing the high sierras with the big half rock or known as “Half Moon” in the foreground. I decided to give the photograph an aged flair, of what it might look like after sitting in a lost box of photos taken back in the 30 or 40′s. I occasionally get request to fix old photos of the past with the red pigment showing all that’s remaining.
  • Umbrellas On Parade, San Francisco,Ca<br /> We were at The Fish Market in Seattle when we went by a store that was all umbrellas, and quite fancy ones at that. I had never seen a store that specialised in elaborate colorful umbrellas before. I wonder if people actually go out in the rain with those expensive things. Being from Phoenix, we hardly ever see umbrellas. If we’re going to a rainy location, we usually pack the kind you can fold up and put in a suitcase. If it breaks we just throw it away. I guess if you break one of those expensive ones, you can use the material for scarfs or handkerchiefs, or something.
  • The Kuttes Swiss Restaurant in Helvetia, West Virginia<br /> We found this quaint little village, population of 59, quite by accident driving the backroads of West Virgina. We decided to get lost way back in the hills of West Virgina, so we took all the remote roads we could find and eventually ran into this neat little town. We stopped at this amazing restaurant called “The Kuttes Swiss Restaurant”, for lunch. The food was incredible. The waitresses wore tradtional Swiss and German clothes and bonnets. The restaurant was stuffed full of antiques. Each room of this home-converted to restaurant, was unique with antiquities from the last few hundred years. I think we spent a couple hours enjoying and photographing this restaurant and village and driving off with some great memories. The isolated community was settled by Swiss, starting in 1869, and is known today for maintaining Swiss traditions, food, and folkways. It’s great in this day and age , to find these treasures unexpectantly along the roads less traveled. I hope you folks with wanderlust in your heart, who enjoy vicariously visiting these travel blogs, take the time to jump in your car, head down the road, with no particular direction in mind, and just discover beautiful places.
  • The Jockey Club at the Grand Hotel, Mackinac Island, Michigan<br /> For $10.00 you can tour the grounds and the iconic Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island. I guess it’s their way of controlling the tourist. I look like at tourist loaded down with photo gear. Quite out of place for a fancy hotel with well-dressed patrons, but hey, I paid my $10.00 and that gave me right-of-way to look completely out of place and photograph anything I wanted, and I did! Though some gave us dirty looks, we were on a mission to explore this fabulous hotel made famous by the movie, “Somewhere in Time”. On the grounds in front of the Grand Hotel is the Jockey Club. It didn’t appear open for business, which for my benefit created a nice photo without distraction.
  • Sea Weed Garden in Ireland<br /> The tide had just gone out and I was sloshing through the sea weed covered jagged rocks, slipping and sliding, looking for the best spot to catch my 1st Ireland sunset. It was a challenge getting out to a good spot knowing what I had to do to get there, but it was an entirely different challenge trying to figure out how to navigate my way back out, once it got dark. The whole area was riddled with crevasses that went deep and if you fell into one, there was no one around to help you get out, and of course the returning tide would have the last word. It was scary to say the least. But, I got some dramatic sunsets that Ireland is famous for! I guess that made it worth it!
  • Tavernetta Ai Cesendeli-Burano, Italy<br /> One of my favorite places in Italy is near Venice. Burano a small island with a character uniquely it’s own, is worth a visit when you’re in Venice. A short boat ride brings you to this quaint colorful town with canals, restaurants, lace and gift shops. Every home and business is painted a different color of the rainbow. For a photographer, the camera never stops clicking. I’ve been here many times and always looking forward to the next possible visit.
  • The Rugged Oregon Coast<br /> This is the 1st year in many that we didn’t tour along the Oregon coast. I really wanted to, but it didn’t fit into our busy travel schedule this summer. Who knows it might still happen, but other trips are planned for the coming weeks.<br /> <br /> This photo was taken along the coast cliffs north of Cannon Beach, Oregon.
